Whoa! It seems that the hard part is finding the action – in this case the word PUT. How are you teaching finding the action? I had no idea that the word PUT indicated addition. Do have a lesson on finding the action word to know whether you add or subtract?

Yes! A key component to understanding and reading a word problem for context is finding the action in the problem.

In the Addition & Subtraction Word Problems resource is a sorting activity for Join and Separate problems. That is the closest I have to a “lesson”. It is more of an activity that students would do after being taught that they need to find the action.

This post has photos of the sorting activity partway down. It also shows you what is in the Word Problems resource. https://www.whatihavelearnedteaching.com/addition-subtraction-word-problems-problem-type-resource/

We do a lot of problems whole-group. We do one a day almost all year long. I emphasize finding the action when I teach students how to solve word problems. It’s the first thing we do after reading the problem.

Are you referring to the word problems in this video? Under the video is a section called “DOWNLOAD ACTIVITIES & NOTES”. The link to the PDF is there for this specfic lesson. There is a link to the PDF for all lessons in the BONUS section LINKS & RESOURCES as well as on the MODULE 2 intro page.

Is there a worksheet in module 2 with example words that represent … start/change/result? The video example was good to follow through.

There are not example words for start / change / result. It varies depending on the context of the word problem. We want to teach students to understand the action of a word problem.

I watched the video for JRU. Where are the additional 3 problems? They were not in the downloads.

The Links and Resource page has the Handouts PDF for Module Two: https://premium.whatihavelearnedteaching.com/list-of-links-resources/ The additional problems are in that PDF.

Wow! I’m amazed at how easy this is! I’m having to rethink how to teach problem solving though.
